Conclusions

1.
On the basis of an analysis of literature data and an examination of the geometric structure of powder and metal gauze porous materials, a mean value of coefficient of tortuosity has been obtained enabling the key characteristic of a porous material — mean pore diameter — to be determined more accurately than has hitherto been possible.
-
2.
Use of mean pore diameters in formulas for processing experimental data has yielded a single formula relating the coefficient of friction to the Reynolds number for filters from 0.10- and 0.20-mm powder fractions and wire gauzes Nos. 450 and 685.
-
3.
The fact that a single coefficient of friction vs Reynolds number relationship has been obtained confirms that the laws governing the flow of gases through pipes apply also to the filtration of gases through the porous materials investigated and that a variant of Eq. (8) can be successfully employed for processing experimental data.
