Reactions of boron and aluminum nitrides, and materials based on them, with refractory metals

  • Published:
Soviet Powder Metallurgy and Metal Ceramics Aims and scope

Conclusions

  1. 1.

Boron nitride reacts with the Groups V and VI metals, with the formation of a mixture of borides and nitrides in the former case and of borides alone in the latter. With rise in reaction temperature, the proportion of borides in a mixture grows. The reaction of aluminum nitride with tantalum results in the formation of a mixture of tantalum nitrides, while its reaction with niobium yields a mixture of nitrides and niobium aluminide; aluminum nitride does not appear to react with molybdenum and tungsten.

  2. 2.

Boron carbonitride (BNTs) and aluminum boronitride (ABN) vigorously react in a vacuum with the refractory metals, forming boride phases. The reactions begin at those temperatures at which incongruent evaporation of these materials becomes appreciable.

  3. 3.

The reactions of boron and aluminum nitrides and materials based on these compounds may be utilized for the preparation of nitride, boride, and aluminide phases of metals and also of materials containing mixtures of these phases.
