Effect of heat treatment on machining characteristics of low-carbon Cr−Mo steels

Conclusions

  1. 1.

    It is recommended, for improved machinability of low-carbon Cr−Mo steels, to subject them, prior to machining, to TCT (n=2–3) with heating above Ac1, holding, and air cooling.

  2. 2.

    High annealing during the final operation has little effect on machinability, and its schedule must be selected in such a way as to provide the required combination of mechanical properties to ensure good service life from the metal molds.
