Summary
A study was made of the solubility of boron and carbon in SiC in the pseudobinary section SiC-BC by the method of alloy growing from the gaseous phase. It was found that the solubility of boron in SiC in the SiC-BC section is greater than those determined in earlier studies for the SiC-B4C and SiC-B sections. The substantial solubility of boron in SiC in the SiC-BC section is of scientific interest. This solubility leads to a marked increase in the hardness and, consequently, wear resistance of the resultant alloys compared with pure SiC.
