Abstract

Calculations have been performed on the state of stress and strain in hard-alloy inserts in drilling bits for various forms of loading, which have been derived from the three-dimensional treatment of the elasticity-theory problem by finite-element methods. An energy criterion is devised for determining insert viability. The shape is considered for an RB-141 rock-cutting tool.
