Sintering of titanium carbide base cermets

  • Published:
Soviet Powder Metallurgy and Metal Ceramics Aims and scope

Summary

A description is given of an investigation into the kinetics of the sintering of titanium carbide base cermets in the presence of a liquid phase. The sintering process is phenomenologically described as a generalized viscous flow under the influence of surface tension forces. A kinetic equation is obtained for densification during sintering. In deriving this equation, the authors postulate that the viscosity of a solid — liquid mixture with a high concentration of solid particles is governed by the sliding of the liquid over the solid particle surface. This is effected, in the authors' opinion, through plastic deformation in the surface layers of the particles.
