Determination of the specific surface (particle size) of powders from the ratio of flow rates measured under different conditions of gas flow in a porous medium

  • Published:
Soviet Powder Metallurgy and Metal Ceramics Aims and scope

Summary

A critical analysis is presented of the existing methods of determining the specific surface S of powders. Attention is drawn to the fact that the widely-used procedures based on gas permeability measurements in compacted specimens have a substantial drawback, namely, a marked dependence of the measured value of S on specimen porosity. A new method is proposed for determining the external specific surface S0 (particle size) of powders from the ratio of flow rates measured under various gas now conditions in a compacted specimen.
