Summary
-
1.
By employing additions forming during hot pressing solid solutions with zirconium dioxide (CaO, MgO, Y2O3, CeO2) it is possible to obtain specimens whose volumetric weight approaches the theoretical density. There is an optimum amount of addition above which the density of hot-pressed specimens decreases.
-
2.
Additions which do not form solid solutions with zirconium dioxide either have no effect on the density of hot-pressed specimens (Ti) or reduce their density as a result of reactive diffusion (SiO2).
-
3.
The kinetics of densification during the final stage of hot pressing are determined by proportionalities characteristic of diffusional sintering, namely, ΔII/II ∼ t1/2 for the elimination of the interconnecting porosity, and ΔII/II ∼ t1/3 for the elimination of the closed pores.
