Summary
A study was made of the feasibility of producing silicides of the rare-earth elements by synthesis from their components, employing the method of melting the latter in an arc furnace in an inert medium, as well as by the reduction of oxides by silicon in a vacuum. On the basis of this investigation, conditions were laid down for the preparation of mono- and disilicides of scandium, yttrium, lanthanum, and cerium.
