Abstract
Measurements from over 40 dug wells completed within the shallow lateritic aquifer around the city of Sokoto showed nitrate enrichment ranging between 20 and 100 mg/l and mostly above the limits recommended for domestic use. The values generally do not show any depth control but were less for forested and residential areas and more beneath agricultural farmlands. Evidence from earlier measurements suggests that the input of nitrates occurred only in the last ten years and could be easily linked to land use practices.
