Abstract
The vibrational spectra of photochemically produced adsorbed ethyl fragments and their thermal rearrangement products have been measured on Pt(111). Heating ethyl fragments, in the presence of adsorbed chlorine, leads to ethylidyne, but not directly; di-σ-bonded ethylene is formed as a relatively stable intermediate.
