Summary
On the basis of literature data and the author's own experimental study, phase equilibria in the ternary systems of the transition metals of groups IV and V with carbon are examined. The phase diagrams shown in the figure have been experimentally verified for the systems Ti-Nb-C, Zr-Hf-C, Zr-V-C, Zr-Nb-C, Zr-Ta-C, Hf-Nb-C, Hf-Ta-C, and Nb-Ta-C. Ternary compounds are missing in the majority of the systems investigated; exceptions are provided by the systems Zr-V-C and, probably, Hf-V-C, which are characterized by η-carbide formation.
