On the generation of new metrics containing arbitrary functions

Abstract

We present simple methods by which certain solutions of the Einstein vacuum equation (and some other equations) can be used to generate further solutions of these equations. In some cases the new solutions admit a smaller number of metric automorphisms than the original ones and are, in this sense, more general.
