1.
The possibility of using the swelling pressure to characterize the loosening capacity of swelling substances was investigated. In our comparative experiments, the swelling pressure served as indicator of the efficiency of the swelling loosening agents. It was found that 2–3% H-carboxymethylcellulose and ultraamylopectin are most efficient in the tablets.

It is shown that 5–10% (of the weight of the active substances) of a mixture of starch and swelling substances in a ratio of 97∶3 in the tablets lead to a substantial reduction in the decomposition time as compared with that of commercial tablets. The efficiency of the mixture is explained by the synergic action of starch, which forms capillaries through which water can penetrate, and the loosening agents investigated, which break up the tablets because their particles swell in the water.
