Abstract

The paper describes the various factors which influence the segregation of silicon-rich compounds at the surface of commercial nickel-iron reed substrates when these are annealed at high temperatures (∼1000°C) in hydrogen atmospheres. The mechanism of formation of these “minor-phases” is still a matter of speculation although results indicate a diffusion controlled selective oxidation process.
