Cleavage fracture of armco iron under a complicated one-dimensional load

  • Published:
Combustion, Explosion and Shock Waves Aims and scope

Abstract

The article reports comprehensive primary experimental information on cleavage in composite specimens, armco iron plates, loaded by two consecutive impacts of a flat striker. This information consists of results of macrokinetic studies of the cleavage process in the form of stress profiles on the boundary of the specimen with a “soft” obstacle and the results of studies on cleavage microdamage that formed in the same experiments in which the stress history was recorded during cleavage. The distribution of the specific surface of microcracks inside saved solid and composite specimens has been determined. A qualitative picture of the evolution of the cleavage fracture of armco iron under a complicated one-dimensional load has been obtained on the basis of the results of macrokinetic measurements and data from microstructural observations of cleavage damage.
