The kinetics of clustering reactions in iron-doped MgO

Quenched samples of iron-doped MgO crystals have been studied during isothermal annealing treatments using high-temperature EPR spectroscopy. The concentration decay of supersaturated Fe Mg . -v Mg associates was found to follow second order kinetics. Several different characteristics of the process kinetics are in agreement with our hypothesis that the reaction being observed is the aggregation of two Fe Mg . -v Mg associates and an unassociated Fe Mg . to form a “3-cluster”. Analysis of the decay rate permitted determination of a diffusion coefficient for the associate.
