Summary
Alterations in EEG pattern produced by hypo- and hyperventilation were studied in curarized, artificially ventilated cats. The EEG tracings, particularly those of the neocortex and hippocampus, exhibited alterations upon changing the volume of ventilation; hypoventilation produced arousal pattern, and hyperventilation drowsy pattern.
The EEG arousal following hypoventilation may not be the direct result of CO2 action, but may largely be due to the diffuse projection from the activated respiratory centers or some CO2-sensitive structures in the brain-stem.
