Summary

  1. 1.

The effect of the female-sterility genedor on embryogenesis has been described.

  2. 2.

In matings ofdor females todor males, female embryos cease development during maturation or early cleavage. Male embryos go on to form a blastoderm but it is aberrant and subsequent developmental events are abnormal. Cellular degeneration begins before the completion of gastrulation, and by sixteen hours the disintegration of the embryo is almost complete. Some embryos die early in development regardless of sex, probably as the result of a maternal effect.

  3. 3.

The pattern of damage in male embryos from matings ofdor females to non-dor males is in general like that of males from matings of mutant to mutant. A small number of embryos succumb because of a maternal effect, regardless of sex. Disintegration of pole cells contained within the posterior midgut has been observed in some female embryos.

  4. 4.

The abnormalities which are associated with the gene are probably related to primary abnormalities in the cytoplasm.

  5. 5.

The possible role of supernumerary sperm in the course of developmentis discussed.
