Effect of acidity on inhibitor efficiency in synthetic ester oil

  • Published:
Chemistry and Technology of Fuels and Oils Aims and scope

Conclusions

  1. 1.

A study has been made of the effect of acidity of synthetic ester oil on the antioxidant efficiency of p-hy-droxydiphenylamine, diphenylamine, Ionol, MB-1, 22–46, Polygard, Captax, and Altax.

  2. 2.

As the acidity increases, the induction period decreases in the oxidation of uninhibited oil, and the antioxidant efficiency of p-hydroxydiphenylamine and phenols decreases. The efficiency of diphenylamine does not change significantly.

The efficiency of Captax, Altax, and Polygard increases.

  3. 3.

It is postulated that, in the case of the Captax and Altax, this behavior is related to an increase in the recombination of mercaptobenzothiazyl radicals with chain-propagating free radicals. The change in efficiency of phenols and amines may be related to formation of hydrogen bonds between the acid and the inhibitor.
