Dynamics of scale formation in gas turbine engines

  • Published:
Chemistry and Technology of Fuels and Oils Aims and scope

Conclusions

  1. 1.

Carbon-bearing deposits on the walls of the fire tubes of gas turbine engines operating on T-1 and T-5 fuels are formed at a high rate (0.12–0.35 g/(sec · m2). The rate of formation of scales is determined by the tendency of the fuel toward scale formation.

  2. 2.

The scales forming in a gas turbine engine operating on T-1 and T-5 fuels have a low thermal conductivity. As a result of this, with the development of scale on the walls of the fire tubes of an engine, the thermal state of their walls changes rapidly.
