Long-term strength of polymers under comeined influence of mechanical stresses and reactor radiation

Abstract

The long-term strength of several polymers in the vertical reactor channel was studied at various temperatures and absorbed radiation doses. It was shown that the time-to-rupture of polymers under these conditions is satisfactorily described by the formula
$$\tau = \frac{B}{{kT/h \cdot e^{ - U'/kT} + C_0 \cdot e^{\beta (T - T_0 )} \cdot j \cdot U'^{ - {\raise0.5ex\hbox{$\scriptstyle 5$}\kern-0.1em/\kern-0.15em\lower0.25ex\hbox{$\scriptstyle 3$}}} }},$$
where C0 and β are empirical coefficients, j is the absorbed radiation dose intensity and U' = (U0 ± ▽U) − (γ + ▽γ) °σ (here ΔU and Δγ denote changes in U0 andγ due to irreversible radiation damage).
