Abstract

A study was carried out for the problem of critical equilibrium of an infinite layer strained in axial tension and weakened by a system of parallel axisymmetric surface cracks. Formulas for determining the critical load for a layer weakened by n cracks were derived. For the case of n=2, simple formulas were obtained for the approximate calculation of the critical load and the angle determining the initial direction of crack propagation; in addition, for n=1,2,3, and 4, calculations were carried out and graphs were plotted showing the dependence of the critical load on the layer thickness. The effect of the number of cracks and their disposition on the critical load was determined.
