1.
In tests in an experimental unit simulating the operation of a ring-liner rubbing pair, additive after-effects were observed in all cases. With fresh oils containing additives, this effect consisted of a retardation of additive exhaustion; with fresh nonadditive oils, the oils acquired neutralizing properties through this effect; with used oils, the effect gave substantial increases in neutralizing capability.

The results from these tests demonstrate that processes of additive-molecule removal from metal surfaces and from foreign contaminants in the oil do go forward under the influence of rubbing action; these processes are also largely responsible for the after-effect phenomenon. Under the conditions of these tests, the role of surface desorption is considerably less important and is of an extremely short-term nature.
