Summary

  1. 1.

A study has been made of isoalkane and cycloalkane impurities in two commercial samples of treated liquid paraffins. About 40 hydrocarbons of branched and cyclic structure have been identified by gas chromatography.

  2. 2.

The major part of the impurities in the liquid paraffins (80–90%) consists of isoalkanes, among which 2-methylalkanes and 3-methylalkanes predominate. Also present in significant amounts are alkylcycloalkanes and isoprenoid hydrocarbons.

  3. 3.

The results obtained by gas-chromatographic analysis of the mixed isoparaffins and cycloparaffins are fully supported by data obtained by IR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry.

  4. 4.

The composition of the isoalkane and cycloalkane impurities in liquid paraffins indicates that most of these materials (with the exception of the isoprenoid hydrocarbons) find their way into the paraffin through adduct formation with urea, not through sorption on the surface of the adduct or urea crystals.
