Purification of petroleum-refinery waste waters by coagulation and regeneration of the coagulant sludge

  • Published:
Chemistry and Technology of Fuels and Oils Aims and scope

Conclusions

  1. 1.

A study has been made of the treatment of petroleum refinery wastewaters by coagulation, using a mixture of ferric sulfate and chloride obtained by chlorinating a solution of ferrous sulfate.

  2. 2.

The average amounts of the Fe2(SO4)3 + FeCl3 coagulant mixture used for this purpose should be in the range 64–166 mg/liter, or 100–250 mg/liter based on the initial FeSO4·7H2O.

  3. 3.

A flow sheet was developed on the basis of coagulation with ferric hydroxide, formed by hydrolysis of a mixture of ferric sulfate and chloride obtained by the oxidation of ferrous sulfate with active chlorine.

  4. 4.

Treatment of water by coagulation with regeneration of the coagulant sludge with sulfuric acid, or with a mixture of acid tar and hydrochloric acid, reduces the consumption of coagulant and the yield of coagulant sludge, and increases mineralization of the water only slightly while at the same time reducing the petroleum product content from 150–250 to 10–15 mg/liter.
