Summary
-
1.
The effect of cathodic polarization upon the endurance of steel fatigued (in the plastic range) in neutral and acid electrolytes is represented by qualitatively similar curves. This is an indirect proof of the possibility of hydrogen embrittlement of metals fatigued in neutral electrolytes.
-
2.
The harmful effect of hydrogen upon the “plastic endurance” at relatively low cathodic current densities is aggravated by the presence of stress concentrators formed as a result of selective corrosion.
