Summary
-
1.
It has been established that the conditions during the running-in period can be substantially improved by the use of the following lubricant additives: boron nitride, zinc sulfide, oleic acid and iron or aluminum organosols. With these additives it is possible to use high bearing loads during the running-in period and to eliminate the risk of seizure.
-
2.
Variation in additive concentration brings about quantitative changes in the characteristics of the running-in process. At concentrations producing minimum wear of the bearing material the extent of wear of the steel shaft attains its maximum; minimum friction coefficients are attained at additive concentrations which require the longest running-in times.
-
3.
A combined zinc sulfide+oleic acid additive ensures satisfactory operation of a friction pair even during the running-in period.
