Summary

  1. 1.

One of the important problems in the theory of external friction is the elucidation of basic laws of the formation of friction-induced surface relief. Studies of submicroscopic relief which, in our view, plays the predominant part in generating friction forces are of particular importance.

  2. 2.

Data on the'physical" surface relief provides a basis for the rational calculation of friction forces and friction coefficients and for the development of a theory of the antifriction and friction characteristics of materials.
