Effect of the slip rate on wear at low temperatures

Conclusions

  1. 1.

The difference in wear at the slip rates investigated is due to the hardening of the surface, depending on the friction conditions.

  2. 2.

The effect of cooling on the wear of rings in vacuum was evident only up to a slip rate of 0.44 m /sec. It is possible that at this slip rate the conditions on the friction surface (mainly temperature) become identical whether or not the sample is cooled. This assumption is indirectly confirmed by the identical value of the wear and friction coefficient, and the same outward appearance of the friction surface.
