In 1972, Dr. Sharfstein was director of a community mental health program in Massachusetts. In 1973, he became Director of the Evaluation Research Program at the National Institute of Health. From 1976 to 1980, he was the director of the NIMH Mental Health Services Division. In 1980, he shifted to the intramural program at the NIMH and in 1983, became Deputy Medical Director of the American Psychiatric Association. In 1986, Dr. Sharfstein became Medical Director of the Sheppard and Enoch Pratt Hospital and Health System in Baltimore; in 1992; he became the Hospital's President and CEO.
