Improvement in the machinability of maraging steels by microalloying with selenium

Metal Science and Heat Treatment Aims and scope

Conclusions

  1. 1.

Selenium added to maraging steels 00N19M3TYuE and 00Kh12N8MTYuE forms titanium selenide.

  2. 2.

The presence of selenides, serving as a lubricant between the tool and the workpiece and also between the tool and the shaving, improves the machinability of the steel. Selenides also reduce the cutting force, facilitate the nucleation of microcracks, and facilitate the process of deformation, acting as an internal lubricant during shearing of blocks in the zone of plastic deformation.
