Abstract
The thermal conditions in surface waters are changed by various human influences, including river draining and canalization and the construction of power plants, water-purification plants, and industrial installations. Quantity and quality of effects are influenced by meteorologic and hydraulic boundary conditions and, of course, by the human influence itself. A special status is given to thermal power plants because of their large amounts of heated effluent. Only through analysis of all the different influencing factors can the thermal overloading of surface waters be prevented, so the question of recycling waste heat will be especially important in the future.
