Summary

  1. 1.

Contrary to the general belief, we have found that the reaction between UIV salt and potassium dichromate is rapid enough at the room temperature.

  2. 2.

The general difficulty experienced in carrying out the direct volumetric titration of UIV salt with potassium dichromate is now explained by us as being due to unsuitability of the indicators previously tried.

  3. 3.

N-phenylanthranilic acid has been found by us to be very suitable as an inside indicator for the direct titration of UIV salt with potassium dichromate. The titration can be carried out rapidly and accurately in the cold.

  4. 4.

Although the reactions NPA+K2Cr2O7 and oxidised (NPA)+UIV are found to be inherently slow, the indicator still functions rapidly and reversibly because these reactions became very fast under the conditions of the titration due to the induced reactions.
