Effect of alloying on the structure and properties of the nitrided case on medium-carbon steels

Metal Science and Heat Treatment Aims and scope

Conclusions

  1. 1.

Alloying of medium-carbon steels with chromium and molybdenum makes it possible to increase the overall thickness of the diffusion layer and the thickness of the carbonitride zone with brief gas nitriding. Nickel has no essential effect on the thickness of the layer.

  2. 2.

With rising temperatures and increasing holding times during brief gas nitriding the porosity of the surface zone of the carbonitride layer on medium-carbon steel increases, leading to a reduction of hardness. Chromium and molybdenum reduce the porosity of the carbonitride layer.

  3. 3.

The highest hardness of the dense section of the carbonitride layer increases when medium-carbon steels are additionally alloyed with chromium and molybdenum.

  4. 4.

Brief gas nitriding increases the fatigue strength of steering supports 50–100%.

  5. 5.

For parts operating under substantial alternating loads one should use mediumcarbon steels alloyed with transition elememts and nitriding conditions producing welldeveloped diffusion layers. To obtain high wear and corrosion resistance it is expedient to obtain nitride layers with carbonitride phase on the surface. Higher quality of the carbonitride layers is ensured by using steels alloyed with chromium and molybdenum.
