Metal Science and Heat Treatment Aims and scope

Conclusion

The procedure that we have developed for the quenching of chisels has made it possible to eliminate a series of operations, and produce the optimum structure and hardness of chisel shanks and blades. Quenching carried out in accordance with the proposed procedure and consideration of the recommendations for eliminating the causes of the brittle fracture of the shank have contributed to a sharp increase in the service life of the chisels. The replacement of oil by an aqueous solution of chlorides has, moreover, made it possible to eliminate a source of fire hazard and environmental pollution. The annual saving generated from/implementation of the described procedure for the quenching of chisels has exceeded 200,000 rubles.
