Summary
Healthy adults and athletes have been tested for the arterial level of glucose, lactate, pyruvate and free fatty acids by enzymatic methods during rest, light and heavy defined physical work and during the phase of recovery. The proportion of the quotients of lactate/pyruvate have been determined by the arterial concentrations of lactate and pyruvate.
-
1.
The level of glucose sinks during physical work. The decrease amounts to 20 per cent during maximal steady state with normal persons. Three minutes after workstop the concentration of glucose is increased by 15 per cent.
-
2.
It has been found out for sure that athletes during equal stress, but also during maximum stress show a less increase of the lactate concentration than the average person. This proves that athletes do not obtain and tolerate higher lactate values during physical work.
-
3.
There is a proved negative relation between the heart volume and the arterial lactate concentration during maximal steady state.
-
4.
The level of the lactate/pyruvate quotients on a defined working level may be considered as a measure of physical capacity: The quotient depends on the training situation, on the age as well as on the quantity and quality of the exercise.
-
5.
If the vita maxima-exercise is immediately preceded by a light physical work, the increase of the lactate concentration and of the lactate/pyruvate-quotient is significantly less compared to a suddenly started vita maxima-exercise.
-
6.
The arterial level of free fatty acids is influenced by the amount and durance of physical work as well as by the age; the physical capacity, however, has no influence on it.
