Summary
In general the methods for the determination of the caloric output during exercise and the calculation of its efficiency is based on the assumption, that the basal metabolism rate (BMR) is constant during exercise.
Experiments were performed in order to determine whether the BMR is altered by a shift in the acid-base equilibrium of the arterial blood, which is of the same order as it can occur during exercise. In dogs CO2 pressure was varied by artificial respiration and the aerobic and anaerobic metabolic rate were measured.
The relation between lg pCO2 and pH in the arterial blood was constant with different pCO2 and the buffer base value remained normal. It is concluded that no additional fixed acids were formed to compensate the disturbed acid-base equilibrium.
Also the influence of different arterial pCO2 on the O2-consumption was determined. The O2 consumption was not altered by pCO2.
The results demonstrate that the BMR is not altered by different CO2 pressures in the arterial blood.
