Summary
An addition of 300 mg/l phenylboric acid (PhB) to the culture medium causes a yeast-like growth of the colonies ofOospora lactis and conspicuous abnormalities of cell form. The same changes are not observed when boric acid solutions (300–500 mg/l) are applied.
A cytochemical analysis of relative enzyme activities yielded the following results: (1.) Alcohol dehydrogenase and succinate dehydrogenase are inhibited, both by PhB and by boric acid. (2.) The peroxidase system is activated in the same manner, by the two substances, although a difference between the grades of activation by PhB and by boric acid is not to be excluded in this case. (3.) Only with regard to cytochrome oxidase is an activating effect confined to PhB, and not observable in boric-acid treated cells.
These results are discussed in connection with a hypothesis (Mathan), according to which, a PhB-induced increase in the level of activity of four oxidative enzymes, i.e. tyrosinase, peroxidase, laccase, and catalase—among other factors—is responsible for certain leaf abnormalities in tomato, which were noticed, only after the application of PhB, but not of boric acid.
