Influence of the earth's gravity on measurements of the critical transport coefficients near the lambda transition of liquid helium

Abstract

A review and general discussion is given of the extent to which the earth's gravitational field affects critical dynamics experiments on liquid He I near the lambda line. It is argued that the measurements of the viscosity and of the ultrasonic attenuation are not significantly affected. The measurements of the thermal conductivity will, however, definitely benefit from a zero-gravity environment. Such measurements will consitute an important test of the current theoretical understanding of lambda-point critical dynamics.
