The influence of band filling on the phase diagram of one-dimensional conductors

Abstract

We give a microscopic description of commensurability effects in one-dimensional metals with a nearly half-filled band. Including the deviation δμ of the Fermi energy from the middle of the conduction band as an additional characteristic energy, a modified renormalization group approach is proposed to study the effect of umklapp processes at arbitrary band filling. The critical exponents are considered as a function of δμ and the phase diagram is constructed as a function of band filling. Taking into account a weak transverse coupling in the mean field approximation, we study the dependence of transition temperatures on band filling for quasi-one-dimensional conductors. We show that besides the metal-to-insulator transition, a metal-to-superconductor transition also can occur under doping. Implications of these results for the new organic conductors are discussed.
