Transport coefficients, superfluid free energy, and the values of the landau parameters in3He

Abstract

The experimental controversy regarding the specific heat measurements and the effective mass ratio in normal liquid3He is investigated from the point of view of the current theoretical understanding of this system. Several independent experimental quantities (the transport coefficients and the superfluid fourth-order free energy invariants) are evaluated using thes-p approximation and three different sets of Landau parameters. It is found that these quantities are in rather good agreement with experiment if the Landau parameters derived from the effective mass ratio of Greywall and Busch are used. The agreement is still acceptable if the results of Wheatley et al. are employed, while if the results of Alvesalo et al. are used, agreement is very poor and in some cases qualitatively incorrect answers are obtained. Thus, if the latter results prove to be accurate, a reexamination of long-held theoretical assumptions may be needed.
