Summary
HPL concentration were measured in maternal serum by means of a radioimmunassay before, during labour and after parturition. Before labour the serum levels of HPL showed no typical or uniform course. However in the beginning of labour there was in 50 percent a peak of the HPL concentration. A different behaviour of the HPL serum concentration could not be stated in women with normal newborns and cases with slight postmaturity. After the birth of the placenta the HPL serum concentration decreased very rapidly. The calculated half time was 24 min. In normal pregnancies there was a statistically significant correlation between the maternal serum concentration and the weight of the placenta.
