Summary
A carcinogenic stylus (20-methyl cholanthrene) was implanted in the corpus uteri of female mice. The reaction of the endometrium and the various uterus layers was examined weekly. Total time of exposure was up to 22 weeks. The first phase of carcinogenic action is marked by traumatic and toxic necrosis of the glandular epithelium and accompanied by exsudative inflammation. As carcinogen crystals are carried away, the small-focus necroses invade the connective tissue of the stroma and induce necrotizing vasculitis there. After typical preliminary stages, beginning with hyperplasia and metaplasia, both adenocarcinoma and squamous epithelium carcinoma develop, with mucoepidermoid carcinoma added in the region of the cervix and the lower uterine segment. The various stages of cancerization, which can be morphologically defined, are discussed and represented schematically.
