Summary

In 22 pregnant women the influence of smoking on the fetal heart rate was recorded.

In 27 investigations, changes in the fetal heart rate occurred 25 times: 10 times there was a tachycardia, 8 times a decrease in fluctuation with tachycardia and 7 times a decrease in fluctuations only.

In 10 patients the influence of smoking on the uteroplacental and cardiac blood pools was examined.

In 5 cases there was first a slight decrease followed by an increase while in the other 5 cases only an increase in uteroplacental blood pool was recorded. Reciprocal changes in the cardiac blood pool occurred only in 6 cases. The possible reasons for these effects on the fetal heart rate and utero-placental blood volume are discussed.
