Metal Science and Heat Treatment Aims and scope

Conclusions

  1. 1.

Silicon increases the oxidation resistance of binary alloys of nickel with chromium, aluminum and manganese.

  2. 2.

Manganese lowers the oxidation resistance of binary alloys of nickel with silicon and aluminum.

  3. 3.

The first additions of aluminum (up to 3%) to Ni-Si alloys containing as much as 1.5% Si decrease the oxidation resistance, but it increases at higher aluminum concentrations. With higher silicon concentrations any aluminum addition increases the oxidation resistance of the alloy. With the addition of up to 3% Al to Ni-Mn alloys with as much as 8% Mn the oxidation resistance decreases, but at higher aluminum concentrations it increases.

  4. 4.

The oxidation resistance is highest for highly alloyed Ni-Si (>3% Si) and Ni-Al (>6% Al) alloys and also ternary Ni-Si-Al and Ni-Cr-Si alloys with >2% Si: It is three to four times higher than for nickel at 1000° and ten times higher at 1200°.
