Conclusions

  1. 1.

Oxidized samples with stress concentrators (ring notch with a root radius of 0.1 mm) of titanium alloys VT1-1, AT2, VT3-1, and VT5-1 have a lower strength and plasticity than those of unoxidized samples at all testing temperatures (20 to −253°).

  2. 2.

When the notch depth is increased from 0.5 to 1.5 mm (same root radius of 0.1 mm) the strength is higher and the plasticity lower for oxidized and unoxidized samples at all testing temperatures.

  3. 3.

Of the alloys investigated, the strength and plastic characteristics in the presence of a stress concentrator are best for the oxidized samples of VT1-1 and AT2. These alloys (especially VT-1) can be recommended for parts used in cryogenic technology (connecting rods, fasteners).

  4. 4.

The use of surface hardening (oxidizing in this case) for samples with stress concentrators in order to improve the operational characteristics at cryogenic temperatures is recommended for alloys VT1-1 and AT2, but not for alloys in which the plasticity decreases substantially at low temperatures.
