Summary
The concentration of the free anino acids was determined by columnar chromotography in 30 sera specimens taken from the cubital veins of 10 mothers and from the umbilical arteries and veins of their respective newborns.
Not only the sum of all the amino acids, but also the values for each of them were higher in the umbilical veins of the newborns, when compared with the values of the mothers cubital veins. A significant rise was registered for glutamic acid, glycine, histidine, proline, and threonine. The difference was 6 to 20% for a greater part of the amino acids. The difference between the arterial and venous values was relatively low and lay between ±5 to 10%.
There is no uniform opinion in the literature whether an active transport of amino acids from the mother to the foetus takes place. Our results demonstrate such a transport.
