Summary
The investigation of two placentae under diabetes mellitus by means of electronic microscope revealed:
-
1.
A complete investment of the villi with the trophoblastic epithelium.
-
2.
Within the syncytiotrophoblast increased dilatation of the rough endoplasmatic reticulum, diminution of the microvilli and pinocytotic vesiculae, swelling-up of the mitochondriae, and a group-arrangement of the nuclei.
-
3.
An almost complete Langhans' layer.
-
4.
In parts a thickening of the trophoblastic basement membrane showing a great many osmiophile inclusions.
-
5.
An increase of mesenchymal cells in the stroma of the villi.
-
6.
A differentiated development of the capillaries and different degrees of dilatation of the sinusoids, numerous tonofibrillae in the endothelium.
-
7.
A not conspicuously thickened, incomplete basement membrane of the endothelium.
The consequence of the findings relating to the metabolic activity of the placenta and the origin of the observed changes are discussed.
