Summary
In the peripheral blood of 68 out of 103 newborn infants maternal erythrocytes could be demonstrated. Proof of these foreign erythrocytes was furnished with help of the direct differential agglutination described byAsby or by means of the mixed cell agglutination according toJones andSilver. Beyond the 40th hour of life maternal erythrocytes could not be proved anymore. In consideration of birth-mechanical aspects the results will permit the following conclusions:
-
1.
The onset of labor obviously is a prerequisite to a materno-fetal transfusion.
-
2.
This presumption is confirmed to a certain degree by the statistically secured linear dependency between duration of birth and frequency of a materno-fetal transfusion.
-
3.
Indications were found that placental permeability in materno-fetal direction is significantly reduced in cases of late toxemia.
The clinical importance of a materno-fetal transfusion according to present views has to be seen in the eventual development of a “respiratory distress syndrome”. In addition to that the occurrence of materno-fetal transfusion is important within the frame of the immunology of pregnancy.
